A guffaw.

A hearty, boisterous burst of laughter.

The Meaning Of Life

We are visitors on this planet.  We are here for ninety or one hundred years at the very most.  During that period, we must try to do something good, something useful with our lives.  If you contribute to other people’s happiness, you will find the true goal, the true meaning of life.

~H.H. The 14th Dalai Lama~

Su brought this simple but inspiring reminder back from Nepal for me, and it now hangs in my room at work, where I can see it every time I need a pick me up.  So far, it has worked like a charm. 😉

Tomorrow is another day…and it will be better.

Being in the health profession, we don’t ask for much.  We don’t seek gratitude.  We don’t expect rewards.  We don’t ask for gratifying or glorifying words.  All we ever need is that you respect us just as we respect you.  We take care of you, when you need to be taken care of, and when we see you get well and sometimes even do better than everyone can ever imagine, we marvel at your strength and perseverance.  That, in itself, is the most satisfying part of our work.  We give you our hearts, sincerely, without expecting anything in return.  Because this is what it is all about.

I was deeply saddened and very much disheartened when I learned that the family of a patient who was under our care some time ago who was very ill and had gone through an extremely stormy period, almost on the brink of death on numerous occasions had gone to the papers to publicly complain and criticize the healthcare they had received.  The patient had been with us needing intensive care for so long that almost all of us in the department had sometime or other spent sleepless nights trying to stabilize her and even when things looked very bleak, we did not give up on her and went above and beyond, simply because we believed this little girl deserved the right to every fighting chance she had.  It was a miracle that she finally pulled through, and to us, this was the best news there could be.

Unfortunately, her parents missed the big picture.  They chose instead to focus on the nitty-gritty things, and instead of coming to us with their disgruntlement, they chose instead to go to the press with their perception of what had transpired.  Well, this is isn’t the first time medical “stories” are published without even them knowing the whole truth, which is something I have utter disrespect and disgust for all parties involved.  We were all very much upset when we read the article.  A colleague of mine even said what’s the point in working anymore when this is what we get?

What’s the point?  I have no answer.  There is no point.  I am upset, but I choose to pause, take a deep breath and continue to believe that as long as we do our job sincerely, and without prejudice, I do not need to have a point. For now.  I hope that I can convince myself for as long as I have passion for my work.

On a brighter note, it is Mid-Autumn Festival today…brings back memories of paper lanterns, rows of colourful candles, chinese tea and goundnuts, mooncakes and pomelo and lots of laughter.  Hope everyone had fun!

Happiness is

…sitting by the beach in a warm embrace, serenaded by the gentle lapping of waves.

…a blissful lazy Sunday morning home-cooked brunch.

…a serendipitous encounter with an old friend, in Old Town.

…unexpectedly finding pieces that will soon be part of your perfect home.

…reunited (…and it feels so good!) even after a long long day for you, and conversations that can never end, oblivious to the rain I brought.

…”N is for cicak” and curry chee cheung fun.

…having the perfect partner-in-crime to go on a furniture treasure hunt…with promises of more to come!

The past two weekends have just been incredibly wonderful.  I opened my mailbox and found this today.  How apt.
