Music – the Language of Love

Posted in love, radio in my head on November 29, 2009 by twotwoeight

There’s just something about a man who can make beautiful music that is captivating beyond words.  I remember back in university days, when I had the opportunity to play the viola alongside professional musicians for a graduation ceremony, I was totally enamoured with one of the violinists.  Well, it didn’t hurt that he was pretty good looking, as far as I can remember ;).

So you can guess how impressed I was when I saw a guy who can play a saxophone whip out a chinese flute and play fluently, followed by the er-hu! If he had played the gu zheng too…I would have melted into a puddle — instantly!

And you know what the best part was?  They started their set with my favourite David Tao song, followed by a Jacky Cheung song!

Welcome to the family :)

Last Saturday, there was an addition to my family.  As quoted by my brother on his Facebook status, “finally someone from my family is getting married!”

The night before, I asked my mum whether she was going to tong kai pai san (prepare a chicken for prayers) the next day and she actually looked stunned and said I was so old-fashioned!!  And this is coming from my mother!

To Alvin…otherwise known as BIL (brother in law), welcome to the family.  Looking forward to making you drink wheatgrass plus bittergourd juice, waxing your leg hair, making you sing Hey Jude in public and loads more.  Now, if you want to be spared, you know what to do…hehehe. 😉

Hhmm, I wonder when will seven become eight…gimme a niece/nephew (or both!) to spoil quick!!! 🙂

the rhythm of resuscitation

Posted in doctoring tales on November 17, 2009 by twotwoeight

“It’s the tempo of legato — at a smooth leisurely pace, not staccato!!!”.

For the past 2 days, I felt like a conductor in an orchestra, only my orchestra was not making beautiful music, but trying to save Chris 11.

Who’s Chris 11?  Chris 11 is the mannequin baby I used for teaching during the Neonatal Resuscitation Programme, which ended today.  For those who are familiar with NRP, the “Bag-2-3” and “1-and-2-and-3-and-bag” song is like second nature and happens on a spinal level without even needing any thought, and thus you would know what I mean when I say the style is legato, not staccato.

I was surprised to discover what a big hurdle it is for new learners, as I had to chant it over and over and over again and still, some could not grasp the rhythm.  When they get the words right, they get the rhythm wrong.  When they finally get the rhythm, the tempo is off.  And then when they eventually get the correct tempo, their hand movements aren’t even co-ordinated with their song.  Aarrgghhhh….

And so, I find myself waving my arms in the air madly, pointing to the chest compressor and the ambubagger alternately while singing “1-and-2-and-3-and-bag”.  Sometimes I act as a metronome too, tapping out the set tempo.

I wish I had a baton to wave around!  That would have been so much cooler ;).

When your closet’s full of these!

the regression of mankind

man's destiny

I had a first-hand encounter of that today.

PW and I were driving around in town today when a guy swerved out into our right of way following which he actually purposely detoured from his intended direction just to tailgate us and sound his car horn continuously followed by an outburst of verbal diarrhoea of obscenities of which 95% of his words were either a derivative or a variation of the word fuck. And this went on for a good 5 minutes at a junction.

To the neanderthal driver of the light blue Waja which I’m sad to say bears a Wilayah Persekutuan registration number, I’m so sorry for you that you have the vocabulary equivalent of an uncivilized nincompoop (although you obviously demonstrated that you are bilingual) and that my little 4 year old patients can put you to shame with their ability to carry an intelligent conversation beyond your capabilities.

I offer your girlfriend my deepest condolences, as she could only sit beside you in utter shame and shake her head in silence, as you exhibit what you think is your Alpha-male trait, and I offer her my prayers that she never has to bear the brunt of your anger, verbal or physical.  I hope you will recognize your need for anger management therapy, as you obviously have issues in channeling your feelings because based on the outburst you displayed today, I’m quite sure you will most certainly create trouble for you and the people around you in days to come.

Oh yes, one more thing.  Do revise your traffic law theory, or better yet, go for a refresher course.  You most certainly need it.
